The Pre-Dental Track concentrates on knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to better prepare students for admission into dental school, enhance their likelihood of success once admitted, and help them become better dentists. The curriculum focuses in areas of dental science including dental anatomy, dental materials, and dental research. Students learn to fabricate and evaluate dental prostheses, an ability that is extremely important in dental school and clinical practice. Students are required to conduct a research project that culminates in a presentation and submission for publication. Coursework and extracurricular experiences are provided that directly relate to the dental school admission process including interview skills, and writing a personal statement. The Pre-Dental Track program consists of 120 semester credit hours, including 89 semester credit hours of Texas Core Curriculum and program prerequisites, and 31 semester credit hours of Dental Laboratory Sciences coursework. Program prerequisites are designed to meet admission requirements of Texas dental schools.
Applicants without a baccalaureate degree must complete the Texas Core Curriculum that consists of 42 semester credit hours. Some courses that satisfy core curriculum requirements may also be used to satisfy program prerequisites. For further information see the Texas General Education Core Web Center. Applicants who have completed the approved core curriculum of another Texas public college or university are not required to complete the courses above.
