Scholarships Available to Physical Therapy Students

the UT Health Science Center Physical Therapy Alumni Association Endowment Scholarship

Purpose – To provide scholarship support for Physical Therapy Students

Eligibility – Current enrollment in physical therapy degree program; good academic standing; student membership in the UT Health Science Center Physical Therapy Alumni Association

Selection Criteria – Leadership, service, and/or previous awards and honors;  service to the Physical Therapy profession, Department of Physical Therapy, and/or the UT Health Science Center Physical Therapy Alumni Association

Application – Submit the following to the Physical Therapy Scholarship Committee:  one-page resume; one reference letter, preferably from a physical therapy clinician (not from the UT Health Science Center faculty member or alumni association executive committee member); two 400-word essays

Matt Karns Memorial Scholarship Endowment

Purpose – To provide scholarship support to students enrolled in the PT program in the School of Health Professions at the UT Health Science Center.

Eligibility – Current fulltime enrollment in physical therapy degree program in the second or third year of the program; good academic standing; student membership in the UT Health Science Center Physical Therapy Alumni Association. Scholarship awards are intended to be applied towards the costs of tuition and fees.

Selection Criteria – Financial need as determined by the UT Health Science Center Financial Aid Office, strong record of service to the community, commitment to the profession of physical therapy, outstanding performance in the classroom and clinical settings.  Recipient will be selected by a committee of clinicians from Baptist Healthlink and approved by the (1) School of Health Professions Scholarship Committee and the (2) the UT Health Science Center Student Loan and Scholarship Committee.

Application – Submit a completed scholarship application form to the SAHS scholarship committee, submit a 1-2 page resume, submit a 500 word maximum typed essay to the scholarship committee chair indicating why they should be the recipient of this scholarship, submit one reference letter from a physical therapy clinician.

Awards in 2007-2008 – none given.

Other – This scholarship is not eligible for renewal.


Oleg Mirzakarimov Scholarship in Pediatric Physical Therapy

Purpose – To support a Physical Therapy student who exhibits the devotion in the field of pediatrics..

Eligibility – Current fulltime enrollment in physical therapy degree program; good academic standing.

Selection Criteria – Educational and/or professional potential, commitment to the profession of pediatric physical therapy, academic performance, special circumstances as determined by the Scholarship Committee.

Application – On an annual basis, students meeting eligibility criteria will be evaluated by the Scholarship Committee, the scholarship committee will review pertinent documentation and select recipient(s) based on the established criteria and selection factors, recipients will be approved by the School of Health Professions Scholarship Committee and the UT Health Science Center Student Loan and Scholarship Committee, recipient must be willing to observe 2 hours of behavioral therapy with a trained BCBA or BCABA-approved therapist within six months after award.

Awards in 2007-2008 – $1000.

Other – The scholarship may be renewed annually, depending on the availability of funds, if the student maintains:

  1. grade point average of at least 3.0
  2. good academic standing
  3. a continued dedication in the field of pediatrics
